Storytelling: Week 4 Courtcase of Ka Likai

This is the court case Ka Likai vs. Husband #2. She is charging her husband with first degree murder and child abuse.

Ka Likai's Lawyer: Could you tell us a little bit about your marriage with your second husband?

Ka Likai: Of course. He knew I was previously married and I had a daughter when we met and got married, but through out our marriage he seemed very jealous of her. I was obviously obsessed with my daughter. I loved her with all of my heart and would do anything for her, she was the light of my life. She was very young so I had to pay attention to her and care for her.
When we got married he had a very stable job and was happy to go to work everyday and provide for our family, just like he agreed to do when we got married. After a while he refused to work and sent me out everyday to work. I had some suspicion that when I was away at work he treated my daughter very poorly. I would sometimes find bruises and cuts on her that were not there when I left for work in the morning. When I asked him about it he would say she was just playing a little too rough. He said he would never hurt her and I trusted him.

Ka Likai's Lawyer: So what happened on the day of the incident?

Ka Likai: I had to go on a long journey for work, because I was the only one providing for the family. I didn't want to leave my daughter for so long, but I trusted that my husband would take care of her. When I returned from my trip my husband seemed to be in a very good mood, which made me happy he had a change in heart, he even made me dinner. I asked where my daughter was and he said that she had gone out to play. I sat down to eat dinner and when I finished I was preparing to battle and pan to chew. When I went to retrieve the basket I saw a hand in it, the hand of my daughter.... I'm sorry its hard for me to talk about.

KaLikai's Lawyer: It's okay. Take time to collect yourself. What happened after you found the hand in the basket?

Ka Likai: I asked for an explanation and he admitted to killing her and... and... he even... he cooked her. He cooked her and fed her to me.

Jury: **Gasps and cries**

Ka Likai's Lawyer: I am so sorry Ka Likai. Can I get her husband up to the stand please?
                               How do you plead?

Husband #2: Guilty, and I do not regret anything I did.

Ka Likai's Lawyer: Please explain yourself.

Husband #2: That little girl and Ka Likai got what they deserved. She only married me so I would support her precious little daughter and she could spend all day at home with her and do nothing. She got away with it for a while. I went to work and gave her money that she would just spend on her daughter. I got fed up with it and decided not to work for her anymore.

Ka Likai's Lawyer: So you planned the murder and the supper? You knew exactly the horrible things you were doing when you did them?

Husband #2: Yes. And I would do it again if I had the chance.

Ka Likai's Lawyer: That's all I needed to know. You can step down now.


Authors Notes: I honestly chose the stories of Khasi because it kind of sounds like my name (Cassie), but I chose this specific story because it was a very shocking story where a lot happened in a small amount of words. It was very memorable due to the shock factor.
In the story of Ka Likai her second husband became very jealous of Ka Likai's daughter, enough to kill her and serve her flesh to Ka Likai. This story was very shocking and scary and defiantly could be portrayed as a court case. In the story you don't really get to know the husband, but it is pretty clear he is an evil crazy man. That is why in the court case I made him plead guilty, because he didn't seem to have any sympathy for his actions.
Ka Likai is the name of a waterfall in India that is very peaceful with subtle sounds of moans and cries. This story ended with Ka Likai throwing herself off the edge of the waterfall to her death. This story is told to warn windowed mothers before remarrying.

Engagement Announcements: Styles Brainstorm

Topic: 
For my storybook I was thinking about writing engagement announcements for famous couples in mythology. When people get engaged now-a-days they normally have a grand story and some like to share it on engagement announcement websites. There are many stories where boy meets girl, they fall in love, they get married. I was going to use the story of Cupid and Psyche , the story of Persephone, and the story of Zeus and Hera. There are so many love stories out there that I just need to find and read, but I am open to suggestions of crazy love stories that would make great engagement stories.

Possible Styles: 
Modern Day. In this style I would talk about the stories as if they happened in 2016. This would be interesting and different, especially because the characters would be gods and goddesses or animals, or mermaid. Also its not very acceptable to marry your sister or kidnap your fiancé. How people fall in love and get married today is much different from how they do in mythology stories so it would be fun to try and change it to make it sound modern.
Males Perspective. These stories would be told in the opposite side of what we normally hear them. So maybe I would tell the story of Persephone in Hades perspective to show the audience his way of thinking throughout the whole kidnapping and what not. This wouldn't always have to be in the males perspective technically. It would just be the side of the story that we do not know.
Fly on the Wall. In this style it would be as if the characters didn't know there was someone else in the room with them. The person (fly) telling the story would just be observing their actions and listening to them talk without really know what is going on. The fly would have funny commentary and maybe reasonable thinking, to kind of put what is going on into perspective as far as how strange greek mythology can be.
Reality TV. These stories would be told as if this was going on in a reality T.V. so there would be breakaways and commentary from the people in the stories. There would be the man and women involved maybe in some stories like "Cupid and Psyche", Venus could pop in and add her thoughts. Other ones friends and family would voice their opinion all while the story is being told.

Possible Topic 1: Mermaids
I have always been a huge fan of mermaids and water and they play a big role in mythology. There are many stories they appear in or the whole story is about them. They are very elegant and beautiful, and some are known to lure men to their deaths, which is pretty cool. There is also the huge debate if mermaids are real or not and its always wonderful hearing those stories (even though I don't really believe them).
Research so far:
I have read some older storybook from students who previously took this class. I looked up the stories that they read for their stories and skimmed a few of them. I have also watched The Little Mermaid probably 80 or so times. A few stories I looked at were the Mermaids Wife, Menanna and Piskaret and The Beautiful Girl and The Fish.

Possible Topic 2: Real vs. Disney
Disney is known for taking very adult stories and turning them PG and colorful. I am a huge fan of Disney, but for most stories I like the original. Disney's Hercules is my all time favorite movie, but its not as happy, bright and cheery as the animated version makes it out to be. This is true with a lot of stories.
Research so far: I have seen just about all of the Disney movies like Tangled, Cinderella, Hercules and Alice in Wonderland, which I personally think is a great first step in research. I do know some of the real stories, but I do need to reread them a little further in depth. I think other people have done this topic so I could go and look at some of the old storybooks.

Possible Topic 3: Engagement Announcements
This could possibly be one of my favorite topic themes. There are so many love stories in Mythology that end in marriage and engagements and engagement stories are my favorite (I always cry). I would write this in the 1st person of the girl who just got engaged whether it be a long romantic story, or one where Hades stole her and brought her to the underworld. Because of the array of stories the engagement announcements would all be very different and hopefully leave you with a smile and a small tear rolling down your face.
Research: Like I mentioned I already know the story of Persephone and I know there are many more like that. Theres also Cupid and Psyche, but I do need to do more research on some of these stories. There are always the classics like Cinderella. I could also add a mermaid story or a story from the bible.

Possible Topic 3: Underwater Mysteries
This kind of  leads back to mermaids, but this is a little bit of an expansion on that. I was thinking I could almost write the stories like they are being broadcasted on the show "Unsolved Mysteries." These are stories that have no ending and lead you to use your imagination to solve them yourself, or keep you guessing forever. With stories about mermaids or water sprites or even monsters like the Kraken there are many things I could do with this topic.
Research so far: In the story of Odysseus he is sailing in most of his adventure so he encounters many water creatures. There are many stories about pirates and water sprites. One that really captures my attention is the Kraken. These things may have already been on "Unsolved Mysteries" now that I think of it.

Week 4: Reading Diary: Khasi

The Tiger and the Monkeys 
The tiger was the ruler of the jungle, but was very ignorant which lead him into being tricked. The monkeys made the tiger believe that a beautiful singing voice coming from the trees was their little sister. After hearing the sweet singing the tiger decided he wanted to marry the young monkey girl and was returning in a week to claim his bride. The monkeys mad a clay monkey but didn't connect the head to the body and tricked the tiger that he decapitated their sister.

The Legend of the Iei Tree 
The Iei Tree sat on a hilltop and casted a shadow so large that it made living conditions unbearable. Some believed the tree was apart of an unknown god, but there were still men who would try and cut it down to save mankind. Overtime they did the tree would heal itself over night, until a little birds, Ka Phriet, told them that the big tiger licked the tree every night to heal it up. finally the men were able to scare the tiger away and finish the task at hand.
 Hunting the Stag Lapland
The Stag Lapland was a noble young animal who was loved by his mother very much. He wanted to go up the hill of Khasi, and even though his mother warned him he still went. When the people in the town saw him they hunted and killed him. When his mother found this out she cried and mourned so loud that the whole town heard. This love and affection is how the Khasi people now base their mourning off of.
The Goddesses Ka Ngot and Ka Iam
Ka Ngot and Ka Iam are twin sisters and Ka Iam is out going and boastful where as her sister is shy and timid. They decided to race to the land of Sylhet, but before the race Ka Iam confidently bragged about winning. They both morphed into rivers and Ka Ngot went slowly and tactfully, and Ka Iam tried to go very quickly and got stuck. They soon found each other and became many rivers, but Ka Ngot is still worshiped to this day because she had won the race.
U Biskurom
The man U Biskurom was sent down by the great God to help mankind with labour and making tools. When mankind saw how talented and sweet he was they took advantage of him and tried to make him do unreasonable things and when he couldn't, they abused him.  He said he had to ascend  to heaven to learn how to do those things and then he would return. When he got to heaven God told him he wasn't going to go back down because of how man kind treated him.
How the Dog Came to Live with Man
The dog belong to the kingdom with all the animals where humans were the eneThemy. The animals were having a fair where everyone brought something they worked for to sell. The dog came across a human family who fed him and gave him the string smelling food to bring to the fair. When the dog opened the container the stench was so strong they humiliated the dog and he went back to the humans to live with.

The Stag and the Snail 

The snail was disgusted by the way the stag was bragging about his swiftness that she challenged him to a race. She was able to keep up with him even though he was sprinting. The snail won the race and the stag, due to sickness, spit up his gull-bladder, which is why no stags have gull bladders.

The Leap of Ka Likai 

Ka Likai is the name of a peaceful waterfall that is completely silent except for a faint sound that sounds like a moan. The story says that there was a young married woman named Ka Likai and she had a daughter she adored. When her husband died she had to get remarried to support her child. When her new husband found this out he grew to ate the child and eventually killed her. He cooked the child into supper for his wife and had her eat it without her knowing. When he told her what he had done she ran to the waterfall and jumped off.
What Caused The Shadow On The Moon
There once lived a mother with 4 children; 3 girls and one boy. The youngest two Ka Sngi (girl), which means the sun, and U Bnai (boy), which means the moon, were the most beautiful. U Bnai was a very rebellious child and left home to live with goblins and vice. When he returned home he saw his sisters beauty and told her that he was to marry her. She was so upset that she threw hot ashes on his face, which left terrible scars that made him only come out at night.

Ghost of Erebus 
Odysseus made the sacrifices upon arrival at the House of Hades and prayed to the god. Around the ship were the ghosts of all the dead and it started to scare Odysseus and his men so they made another sacrifice.
The Ghost of Elpenor and Teiresias
They soon saw Elpenor, who asked them to go back to the house of Circe and burry his body out of respect. Odysseus also saw his mothers ghost who was alive at the time he left his home. Teiresias gave them instruction on what to do on their journey home and Odysseus agreed to doing it, and then asked about how he can talk to his mother.
The Spirit of Anticleia
Odysseus speaks to his mother and asks her about everyone back home. She says they are okay, but heart broken without Odysseus. He asked his mother how she died and she told him that she simply died because she couldn't take the pain of him being gone any longer.
The Ghost of Famous Women 
Odysseus talked to many women who had children with god like Poseidon and Zues or daughter of such gods.
The Ghost of Agamemnon
Agamemnon told the men the story of how he died. He was brutally murdered by his wife and he asked Odysseus if he could tell him if his son is still alive. Odysseus said that there is no way for him to know if he is alive or dead.
The Spirit of Achilles 
Odysseus told Achilles of all the great things his son did for them in battle. All the men he killed and the victories he helped them win.
The Ghost of Ajax
Ajax did not talk to Odysseus because of a battle they had where Odysseus won all of Achilles armor. In the house of Hades Odysseus and his men saw all these other men being tortured for all thier wrong doings while they were alive. The men got scared and got on the boat and started to head home.
The Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis 
Odysseus a tied himself to the ship while his men filled their ears with wax as they sailed by the Sirens and their sweet song. The trip through Scylla and Charybdis was not as smooth. They threw them into the ocean from their boats.

Week 3: Reading Diary: Homer's Odyssey

Homer’s Odyssey

The Land of the Cyclops

Odysseus and his men are arrived to the land of the Cyclops at night. The Cyclops are aggressive men who live like savage cavemen. There is no law and order, no ploughed fields, markets or ship ports, and they all fend for themselves. The live in caves on the mountain slopes.

Odysseus gathered his men and they went to explore the Cyclops. His crew boards a ship and they found a cave where a monster lived in solitude.

Prisoners of the Cyclops

They went into the cave bringing the sweet wine Odysseus received from the city of Ciconians. Odysseus was hoping for a polite welcoming Cyclops, but instead he ate two of his crew members and then fell asleep. The men knew they had to leave but there was a stone covering the opening only the cyclops could move. 

The Cyclops Defeated 

The men found a club and sharpened it into point to use against the Cyclops. Odysseus got him to drink a lot of the wine he brought and he told the cyclops his name was Nobody. The Cyclops soon fell asleep and at that moment the men stabbed him in the eye with the sharpened club. When he called for help he told his neighbors "Nobody hurt me," and he looked foolish. 

Escape from the Cyclops

The men escaped by attaching themselves to the under bellies of the sheep, and it worked! When they got out Odysseus has to open his big mouth and yell as their escaping which leads to the cyclops throwing a rock and almost hitting them. When they were escaping Odysseus told the cyclops his real name. The cyclops told him that he fulfilled the prophesy that was told to him that he would be blinded by a man named Odysseus. 

The Curse of Polyphemus 

As they were sailing away the Cyclops cursed Odysseus, saying that he won't make it back to his home or if he is destined to then for it to be a horrible trip where he looses his ship and crew and he finds trouble when he arrives home. 

Circe's Magic

Eurylochus and eleven of the men went to Circe's house where she drugged all the men except Eurylochus, changing them into pigs. Eurylochus went back to Odysseus to tell him the news, and Odysseus went to go save them. On his way Hermes gave Odysseus herbs that would keep him safe and instructions that would free his men.

The Moly Defeats Circe

The Moly is the plant Hermes gave Odysseus to keep him safe from the drugs, and it worked! Odysseus was able to beat Circe and free his men. 

On Circe's Island

Circe welcomed Odysseus and his men into her house for a very long time where they had endless food and wine. After a While the crew reminded Odysseus he was on a journey home and he asked Circe if they could leave. She agreed but told him that he has to make a stop at the House of Hades to visit a ghost, Theban. Odysseus reminded her no one has ever survived that trip in a black ship. 

The Death of Elpenor

Circe gave Odysseus directions and instructions on what to do when arrives to the House of Hades. As the men were leaving, one of the men, Elpenor, fell off the roof and died. His spirit was sent to the House of Hades, right where his previous crew was headed also.
